In the rush to protect against cyber attacks, some companies forget that physical security is still a vital concern, regardless of the neighborhood’s safety level. All companies must consider the weaknesses and vulnerabilities that may be present and create a security system that will provide the safest environment possible for employees, customers and the company’s property.

Common Security Issues

Most businesses will need to deal with common security issues like theft and vandalism, and the first step in creating an effective web of protection is identifying each potential security issue. Secondly, the company must figure out what types of security will offer the best protection for those types of security threats.

Most businesses will need to consider the following common security threats when designing an effective security defense:

  • Outside theft
  • Vandalism
  • Employee theft
  • Workplace violence

Each of these issues has a security solution that overlaps with other issues, which means security cameras that protect the exterior from thieves may also help guard against employee theft and vandalism.

Every Business is Different

No company is exactly like another, which means that business security systems need modification or enhancement to cover all bases. For example, a retail store will probably need extensive security cameras and an active CCTV system along with access door systems at the rear of the store where merchandise is stored.

On the other hand, a building where a company might not entertain customers on a regular basis, would probably need much more extensive gating and access points, which would ensure unauthorized individuals couldn’t enter the building or get on the property. Installing security cameras in places like stairwells, the employee parking lot and each entry point of the building would also help reduce the likelihood of crime.

Rare Security Threats Also Require Consideration

Some security problems seem as though they could be part of a movie plot. Issues like terrorism and espionage that commonly appear in James Bond movies can also become problems in the most cautious businesses. In addition, companies must also consider the likelihood of a natural disaster and how security systems would need to deal with such an event.

For example, a company might suffer a catastrophic flood that made the office space uninhabitable for a period of time. Depending on the severity of the disaster and whether security personnel could return to the worksite, a company might need security protection that would work despite the loss of power. Even if there is only a very small likelihood of a major flood, tornado or hurricane impacting the company, it’s vital to remember disaster-proof security options.

Companies whose business security system has been at work for more than a decade should look into how modern systems may enhance security levels. A company may be vulnerable to new business security threats with old equipment. Keeping ahead of criminals requires constant attention to business security.
