When someone mentions home security you probably only think about burglary protection.  Security systems are like computers in that they are much less expensive and are of a higher quality than in the past.  Also like computers today’s security system will perform a multitude of functions that a few years ago seemed unimaginable.  In addition to burglary protection today’s security system can be enhanced with the following features:

Flood and temperature monitors:  Your home is protected from faulty appliances, plumbing leaks and floods with a temperature sensor or floor detector.

Carbon monoxide detectors:  A carbon monoxide detector can be added to a new or existing system to protect your family from this toxic gas.

Monitored Smoke Detectors:  Only monitored smoke detectors can provide a signal to our central station where emergency authorities can be summoned, 24 hours a day, every day.  Smoke detectors are always working even if you do not arm your system.

Medical alert: With the press of a button you can notify our central monitoring station if you have an emergency. The emergency pendant (or watch) provides increased independence and peace of mind to an older person or disabled family member.

Outdoor protection: Protect your assets with driveway entry alarms, gate alarms and sensors for your heating and air conditioning system.

Pet friendly alarm systems: Pets up to 100 lbs. can move freely about your home without setting off the alarm.

GSM Cellular Communicator: More and more homeowners are moving away from traditional phone lines to cell phones and VOIP.  Add that to the risk of potential phone line failure and your security could be compromised.  By adding a GSM communicator to your current system, you can be assured that your alarm signals get through.

Additional keypads and remote panic buttons:  You can arm and disarm your entire security system with a small remote button that attaches to your keychain.  The remote can also be programmed to work as a panic button should someone suspicious approach as you enter and leave your home.

Cameras: The latest trend in home security provides you an additional layer of protection in your home.  Monitor activity in your home and yard with a home camera system. View into your home through an internet connection when you are away.

College is a rite of passage.  It is a place to learn, achieve and have fun.  As you begin to pack your trunks to head off to school spend a few minutes thinking about your safety to ensure your college experience is a positive one.  Like most students, your living space will house your valuables: computer, mobile devices, jewelry, clothing, furniture and personal information.

Here are a few pointers to consider:

On Campus:

Know the campus and the surrounding areas.  Know where the safe areas are.

Know where the emergency phones are located.  Have the campus police number on speed dial.

Be aware of your surroundings do not get distracted while talking on the phone or listening to music with earbuds in. Make sure you can hear what is going on around you.

Avoid being outside alone in the dark, take advantage of the campus escort services.

Make sure a roommate or friend knows your schedule.

Keep mace hand.

Park your car in a well lit area. Don’t leave valuables in your car, leave nothing in plain view.

Make sure you lock your car.  If your car breaks down, do not leave your vehicle, wait for help to arrive.

In the dorm:

Read the rules.

Make sure the outside doors are secure.  Do not let anyone into the building that you do not know.  Remember if you see something – say something.

Lock your door, keep windows locked.  Close blinds or curtains at dark.

Protect your personal information, ID cards, and keys.  Have a list of all the valuables along with serial numbers and pictures of the items.  Don’t forget to have a copy of any credit cards, licenses and bank information to keep in a safe place away from school.

Secure your electronic equipment.
